Meet Gabriela

A woman in a blue blazer and wide-leg jeans standing in an art gallery with sculpture busts, a horse sculpture, and a colorful abstract painting on the wall.

Working predominantly with figures, my intention is to create iconic representations of totems and amulets that offer sympathetic magic.  The textures in my work and the use of earthy and deep tones evoke memories of dyed textiles, the scent of incense, church icons, clay vases, and weathered sculptures.

“My latest work is inspired by natural form of the ‘tecomate” used to carry water. The rounded organic shapes are seamlessly integrated into my figures emphasizing the connection to life and nurture and refering to women holding something, someone of themselves. This dual imagery suggests that nurturing can extend beyond a child to encompass personal projects, ideas, or the self.”
